Weekend Tastings: Ice Cream & Cookies, Ice Cream & Bagels, Ice Cream & Babka

Salt & Straw, a Portland-based ice cream maker which earlier this year announced it would be opening on the Upper West Side, will be popping up at three UWS locations in the next few days. This will serve as a preview ahead of its official opening, which we’re told will be happening “this fall” at 360 Amsterdam Avenue at 77th Street.

Between Friday and Sunday, Salt & Straw will be collaborating with Levain Bakery, Breads Bakery and Popup Bagels. All offerings will be on the table “while supplies last.”

At 3 p.m. on Friday, head to the Levain Bakery at 351 Amsterdam Avenue (at 77th Street) for some cookies and ice cream. You’ll have a choose between a Two Chip Chocolate Chip Cookie with Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons ice cream, or a Rocky Road Cookie with Chocolate Gooey Brownie ice cream. You have to pay for the cookie. The ice cream will be free.

On Saturday at 1 p.m., head to the recently opened Popup Bagels at 338 Columbus Avenue (at 76th Street) if you want to experience a bagel ice cream sandwich. This will consist of “scoops of Salt & Straw’s Sea Salt w/ Caramel Ribbons and Strawberry Coconut Water Sherbet (v) Salt & Straw ice cream sandwiched between a hot, fresh Salt bagel for a unique savory-meets-sweet combination.” The unique creation will be free for the first 100 customers.

Finally, head to Breads Bakery at 1890 Broadway (at 63rd Street) on Saturday at 2 p.m. for a Babka sundae: “a warm slice of their cult-favorite Chocolate Babka, a choice of Salt & Straw’s Double Fold Vanilla or Arbequina Olive Oil ice cream, and topped with maraschino cherries, nutella fudge and candied hazelnuts.”

The pop-up series comes ahead of Salt & Straw’s highly anticipated New York City debut this fall, when it will open its first ever shop in the city in the Upper West Side, followed by a second shop in the West Village.

The UWS seemed excited when we first shared the news about Salt & Straw’s expansion.

The space at 360 Amsterdam Avenue was previously home to The Cottage, which closed in 2020 and reopened on 78th and Broadway as New Cottage about a year later.
