One of our readers sent us a video she took late Wednesday night from her high floor apartment on 69th and Riverside Boulevard. She was facing the camera east towards Central Park, and noticed a strange light changing colors in the sky.
At various points in the video, the light appears to be purple, red, green and blue. It also seems to take different hues of each color.

Several other recent videos have displayed similar occurrences in NYC’s sky.

An April 2021 article in the NY Times took note of a serious rise in UFO sightings during 2020, with New York State seeing almost twice as many as were reported in 2019 (about 300 vs. 159, according to the Times). But those who study the strange flying objects attribute this increase, at least in part, to the coronavirus – and the extra free time it gave people. To look up.
Would the light patterns displayed in the videos above be considered “Unidentified Flying Objects”? They’re kind of just floating.

The article also notes that many City residents moved upstate, where there is less pollution making for clearer skies. But this obviously doesn’t explain the videos above.

Whether you want to call it an “Unidentified Flying Object” or just a weird patch of oddly-colored sky, those strange lights are still here.
On April 15, 2021 at about 7pm, reader Lisa Martinelli took this video from her terrace on West 100th Street, looking south east across Central Park.

Looks like reflections from colored lighting on buildings, reflecting off clouds. Not uncommon, just usually not colored. We’ve seen this lots of times before in cloudy evenings but it’s more noticeable under certain atmospheric conditions.

My guess is the colored lights from the Kosciusko Bridge. If the clouds are low enough it could bounce right off them.

Just saw two of these light spots around 12:30 in Queens amidst a lightning storm…they moved away from my field of view and then it began to rain.

I saw a very bright orange light similar to these over the west side of Manhattan last night, around 1 am, but bigger and brighter partially obscured by clouds. By 1:30 am, it was gone. Very weird.
i just saw the same thing literally a few minutes ago while walking my dog.. ive seen this a couple times already in the lower east side ny… but they do seem to be always visible when theres clouds .. they look like their using the clouds as a camouflage .. just WOW

Looking east from the lower east side, it could be the Koscuisko Bridge lights reflecting in the clouds. But I thought that light show had been stopped for financial reasons. And looking west from the upper west side? That’s gotta be something else … Anything lit up orange or changing colors in New Jersey?
It is East from the UWS and not any man made light show. As the other people commented it only happens while it’s cloudy at night.
Can’t be the bridge this light comes out once in a while… I’ve never seen it more than once every few weeks. This light looks like it’s right on top of the east river.???

It’s the Kosciusko Bridge for sure. I have floor to ceiling windows in my 15th floor apartment in Williamsburg and I have an unobstructed view of the bridge. I watch the light show every night. It’s more pronounced on cloudy nights.
I have to disagree, the bridge is 50 blocks from me. And why is it the lights are only seen during certain conditions? This light is approximately around east 90s I am on Central Park West near 97th.
I live in New Jersey now but have an unobstructed view of midtown Manhattan. I saw white flashing lights in the sky that would also turn bluish and greenish. I saw this last night which was a pretty cloudy night. I also took videos of it…very strange
Yup, I saw it too. I am pretty sure it’s a weather related phenomena. I know for sure it is NOT from a bridge or building- Would bet $$$ on that!

Ok, umm I live around manhattan east side not far from central at all. I know alot of people wanna create logical explanations when it comes to things, but somtimes we have to be real with ourselves and understand that there are just some things that we can’t place a logical explanation on. I started seeing these lights late last year around late August these lights are strange and do move with the clouds for me I see alot of lights around the sky and the sky doesn’t look normal like it use to. I have tons of videos and pictures as well. These aren’t normal two lights appeared last night they like spit into two but lit up at once all those colors and on the other side the sky also lights up it recently started turning green. It’s weird. These lights appear often.
Clouds can communicate just like birds and do hide things from us and wind works to enable their movement to their destination. They can form images and it is a way to send messages. Indian cloud readers know this, NASA knows the clouds chirp now too. There is a lot going on in our universe and we are always being monitored at all times. It is confusing for us but there are the bad and the good and both are involved. But one is playing tricks on us so beware of your gut instinct
I found this cause I was curious, I knew I could have been the only one seeing these lights. And many are seeing them from different locations, it’s not from a bridge I’m telling you
Our educational system has failed us. People will believe anything.
There’s much mention of this phenomenon being associated with cloudy skies. That makes perfect sense: without clouds/fog/haze/mist, the source of the light (whatever it may be) would essentially be visibly only directly, whereas with such conditions it can be reflected & refracted over a larger area, making it more conspicuous. (Similarly, a laser beam in a vacuum is invisible when viewed from the side, but add a little smoke — or, if the laser is sufficiently powerful, merely air — and lo!, there it is.) In theory, light could be bounced across town from cloud to cloud, making a single source appear in multiple spots.
I’ve observed such sights for decades in my night-time walks through the city. Almost invariably, it turned out to be the Empire State Building, especially when it does its too-infrequent, full-blown psychedelic light-show routine. When not the ESB, it’s usually been especially gaudy searchlights promoting the latest hit whatever, or occasionally some other tower (e.g., the Printing Crafts Building) getting in on the ESB act.
But if anyone would care to focus on eliminating the obvious candidate, next time you see the mystery light, try correlating it with https://www.esbnyc.com/about/live-cam . Maybe that’s the answer. I doubt it’s Klattu.
You are exactly right. I have unobstructed views of both the Kosciusko Bridge and the Empire State Building/Bank of America tower. I watch the light show from all of these buildings in the sky each night. I sent video to the author of this article. It’s just man made light being reflected in the clouds. Basic science.
I believe it’s the New York Hall Of Science in Corona Park. Last fall we saw a number of New York Film Festival screenings at the Queens Drive-In which is right next to the Hall Of Science. On a cloudy night you can clearly see the vertical shaft of color shifting light emanating from the building.
It’s the Kosciusko Bridge on the BQE…I am on 76/Amsterdam and looking straight across the park can see the lights whenever the clouds are low. It’s actually visible right at this very moment 🙂
It is 100% the reflection on the clouds of the lights on the Kosciusko Bridge. If you watch a video of the bridge on YouTube you will see the lights change in the colors of the rainbow. If you watch the reflection we can see in the clouds (I’m at 93rd & Columbus), the lights go red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, then starts over.
I resided in The South Bronx and my observations on 4/17/2021 were of two (2) in which one transitioned from green-blue-purple-red and the other remained burgundy. I visited both locations and stood directly below it. One on 172nd and Boone and the other on Westchester and Southern boulevard. Absolutely confident that it was not a weather phenomenon/illusion, law enforcement/civilian drone, spotlights, nor the Kawasaki bridge. Not saying it’s aliens…………….but it’s aliens. Deadass. I was just in Florida, flew into Miami and stayed in Aventura. We were outside by the pool and saw a colored box in the sky that would dim and brighten into other colors just like these videos but it was a box. Very odd and someone in the group said it could be Space X or international space station but i’ve never seen anything like it, ofcourse no video was taking because we were in Aw. What is it?

Listen up gang, I was just in Williamsburg Brooklyn and got a whole video of the lights changing colors. Then it disappeared, not sure if that bridge is nearby or not but I definitely didn’t think it was coming off of a building. If it was why did it disappear?

I’m in Brooklyn. So weird, I need someone to tell me what those lights were. They were way to high in the sky to be reflected off of something from the ground and in the video i took I saw 2 white lights shooting across the colorful lights. I’ve been searching to see if anyone else saw it. Now my 8 year old believes ufo lol

I can confirm, 100%, this is the Kosciuszko Bridge. The bridge is visible from my apartment in UES, and on nights with low cloud cover it is reflected in the sky. There are other moving lights dancing through it sometimes that are still a mystery though.
I don’t even know where that bridge is but those lights were in the sky outside my bedroom window in Brooklyn east new york, clear above the post office. It’s definitely not light shining from something else it was way too high in the sky to just be a reflection of light
I will try to capture a video that includes the bridge at the same time next time I see it. The sky changes color in perfect sync with the bridge. It only occurs on nights with low cloud cover.
Hello! Who is Mufon? I just witnessed and recorded the same thing in Brooklyn NY. Weather conditions are cloudy.
It’s the Kosciusko Bridge lights being reflected very high up in the clouds (yes, the light reflects that high up just like the 911 memorial lights reflect very high up). I sent video to the author. I watch the light show every night over the bridge and I watch the lights over Manhattan change every night as the light colors change on the Empire State Building and the Bank of America tower. I have unobstructed views of the bridge from my 15th floor Williamsburg apartment. Also my building tower is right next to the BQE. Also it’s a flight path for LaGuardia airport. I watch the planes fly past my floor to ceiling windows and then over the bridge all day and night. So they sometimes cut through the reflected light from the bridge. Hopefully the author posts my vid.
Aliens are clearly using the Kosciusko Bridge lights as cover, and it’s not concealing them completely.
So what explains the lights that change color that are visible looking west over the Upper West Side?
I just took a similar video in White Plains, NY. Weather conditions: cloudy, lightening, and showers.
Airspace above New York City is one of the most highly regulated air spaces in United States. If there is anything in the air above New York City the FAA would know all about it. These are quite obviously ground lights reflecting off of low clouds. I’ve seen it a million times and we will all continue to see it as the lights are not likely to go away anytime soon.
It is not reflecting from any bridge you’re talking about, if it was tell me why I saw these exact same lights all the way from the UK, London.. 6th Nov At around 7pm? stop rationalizing, we don’t know what it is. I have a video too and it’s very strange, I’m just surprised people from the states can see the lights too.

I saw the same as in video on the eve of 12/28/21. Over a regular flat residential neighborhood in Brooklyn. Flatlands Brooklyn to be exact, in a closer to north but western direction in my backyard. Glad to find I’m not alone in seeing this. It is the only time I’ve seen it in my almost 40 years plus of looking out to this bit of sky most evenings at the same time. Absolutely not a light affect from a reflection in my opinion. I will only add that it felt like a positive sign I needed in that moment. Maybe other who have seen this ( especially as video captured) can think back on those times and reflect on the feeling from the sight?

It is February 16th 2022 @12:22 AM and I am currently witnessing this seemingly strange phenomenon in the sky. I came outside to take down a bird feeder that has been making a lot of noise banging on my balcony wall because it is very windy tonight. I looked out to see a purple/pinkish spot in the sky behind the clouds. I rubbed my eyes and looked again only to see it was still there. I took some pictures and videos to document this event. I went inside to google what it could be.. turns out I’m not the only one wondering about this strange occurrence.

I’ve seen the same lights changing color, in Bedford Stuyvesant (Brooklyn, NY)… This is not a weather phenomenon… These lights are now appearing all over the world… I’ve also seen a large glowing white orb appear in the sky and then splitting into two orbs, no sound at all… Research angels and what they really look like… Descriptions are in the bible… They’re not how many have described…
My husband and I saw the color lights tonight from our rooftop in Harlem. We were in awe, wondering what they. We saw blue, green, orange, pink lights in a particular cloud above us.

I have been seeing this for a few years now. Not sure what it is. I have pictures and video. It’s not always in the same location either. Saw this in eastern Long Island on multiple occasions.

I’ve recently witnessed this happening in Clearwater Florida in the early morning of 5-20-2024 and what I figured out is that it’s weather control. It’s done with high powered lasers from satellites up above if you notice the area of the cloud that gets lit up evaporates. Do your research they also call it hole boring clouds with lasers. Scientists are figuring out how to laser clouds to make it rain in different places. If you don’t believe me you can see it for yourself because Dubai has done it already. It’s on YouTube the lasers actually have an effect on the clouds depending on what spectrum laser has been shot at it. It’s all apart of weather control.
