A recently married woman, Danielle Gelfand, lost the diamond from her engagement ring this past Friday, which was also the day before her birthday. The diamond came loose and fell underneath the refrigerator of a newsstand on 82nd and Broadway, CBS New York has reported.
The diamond had been passed down from her grandmother to her mother. Gelfand’s grandmother had possession of the ring during World War I and through the Holocaust, so this loss has been very emotional for her.
“My mother, who fled during the Holocaust from Belgium to Morocco, gave my husband this ring for me. It’s something that has survived not one war, but two, including the first World War. So, you know, I just, I was horrified,” Gelfand said CBS New York.
The NYPD’s emergency service unit has been trying to help her find the missing diamond, but as of now they haven’t been able to locate it.
Gelfand was scheduled to meet the owner of the newsstand this morning … so hopefully they’ve either found the family heirloom, or they’re getting closer to finding it.
