Discount department store Burlington, formerly Burlington Coat Factory, is coming to 808 Columbus Ave. at 99th Street. The site was previously a Michael’s Arts & Crafts. Burlington currently has a total of three locations operating in Manhattan.
A publicly traded company (NYSE: BURL), Burlington is the third largest off-price retailer behind TJX Companies — which runs brands like TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods — and Ross Stores, which operates under the name Ross Dress for Less.

Headquartered in Burlington, New Jersey, Burlington currently operates roughly 869 locations. In a 2021 story by The Real Deal, Burlington’s CEO told the publication that their goal was to open 2,000 locations, doubling their initial goal of 1,000 stores. Burlington’s CEO, Michael O’Sullivan, said “This new target takes account of the significant market share opportunity that we see ahead of us, and of the improvements we are making in our business with Burlington 2.0, in particular the significant reduction in inventory levels and the smaller store footprint that this enables.”
O’Sullivan was referring to the company’s plan to open smaller stores than the traditional large spaces they’ve been known to occupy in the past. When that story came out, Burlington had 761 stores open.
For the cost-effective shopper, Burlington has all kinds of essentials for women and men; most notably, clothes (coats), beauty products, shoes and accessories like watches, handbags and wallets. You can also score seasonal items like beachwear, pool toys and grilling supplies for the summer right now. There are also items for kids and babies with car seats, diapers and diaper bags, baby formula and clothes.
Those who were fans of Century 21 — which sadly closed all its stores in 2020 but is expected to make a return — might find some appeal to Burlington. Perhaps taking a page from the Burlington playbook, Century 21 is planning to open a smaller-scale version in its old space at 25 Church St., hopefully in spring 2023.
We’ve reached out to Burlington to see when we should expect the Upper West Side store to open. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
The quality and brands sold at Burlington are no match for Century 21 or even TJMaxx. They have a place for basics but comparing them to C21 is way off-base.
wow – this is exciting news! I just hope crime doesn’t go up — because over on 116 and 125 people just take stuff like crazy from the department stores!
it is opening right next door to TJ Maxx and across the street from Homegoods, and a Target also opened on the same block not long ago… i wonder if another spot might have been better for all of those businesses?
Just because there is a few nogoods does not mean everyone is a no good I am very happy that Burlington chose Harlem for their establishment we are a community of many FLAVORS and just because there is a few knuckle heads the whole community should not have to pay for their dishonesty Congratulations to BURLINGTON and WELCOME it means JOBS YA!!! I for one will be applying!!! Linda
When is this store opening?
