COVID rates are rising in several parts of Manhattan, with Lincoln Square recently showing the highest percent positive rate.
The 10069 zip code was 3.15% positive between October 31 and November 6, according to the NYC Health Department; this percentage is based on 9 positive cases out of 286 people tested within this time period. The boundaries of 10069 are from 59th to 72nd Streets along Freedom Place and Riverside Boulevard.
At last count, the population of 10069 was 5,199, according to both city-data.com and unitedstateszipcodes.org.
Between 10/31 and 11/6, NYC as a whole saw a 2.26% positive rate with 4,778 cases, up from 1.87% positive and 4,041 cases in the previous 4 weeks.
The other two zip codes with the highest percent positive rates were 10040 (Washington Heights) and 10039 (Central Harlem), with respective rates of 2.83% and 2.63%.
Other UWS zip codes, in terms of percentages, have faired better between these dates:
- 10023: .96% positive, based on 21 positive cases out of 2,179 tests.
- 10024: 1.35% positive, based on 29 positive cases out of 2,148 tests.
- 10025: .83% positive, based on 35 positive cases out of 4,238 tests.
With rates rising, Mayor de Blasio announced on Monday, November 9 that additional restrictions may be in the nearby future for NYC. In a press conference, the mayor said “we’re seeing a real growth in the positivity rate in the city, and that is dangerous. So we have one last chance to stop a second wave, it’s as simple as this. This is my message to all New Yorkers: we can stop a second wave if we act immediately, but we have one last chance, and everyone has to be a part of it.” He continued to state that “we’re seeing this we haven’t seen in a long time, and we have to stop them.”
Mayor de Blasio hinted that new restrictions and lockdowns could be possible if these patters continue.
Happily, our local representatives are safely ensconced in the Hamptons. But unfortunately, for those of us still on the Upper West Side, there is no leadership who could ask the NYPD to please get out of their patrol cars and kindly ask those with chin straps to pull their masks up as they are supposed to be used. Infection rates are climbing and no one is doing anything (deBlasio is yakking to the press but no one cares what he says.)
That’s just silly. Helen Rosenthal lives across the street from me, and I see her all the time. Linda lives in Queens, and I have seen her twice in the past three weeks. And others are also still here in the City with the rest of us. Stop drinking the Kool-Aid and find out actual facts before you make stupid statements like that.
As for the NYPD, mask-wearing is merely a mayoral directive. And while the NYPD COULD issue summonses (which would all likely be thrown out of court), they are not going to take the time to issue dozens to hundreds of summonses per day. It is a waste of their time and YOUR tax dollars.
In fact, Suffolk county has a rate of infection twice ours.
So the Hamptons are not a refuge.
Good point!!
Keep in mind that the virus does not observe zip codes. So the areas around these zip codes are also of concern.
This article and headline is quite unnecessarily alarmist. 10069 has a very small population when compared to its neighboring zip codes. 9 cases in the entire zip code could be 2-3 families. Literally across the street from these 10069 buildings is the 10023 zip code which has one of the lowest rates. So even if you would combine the two zip codes and their total number of cases — the infection rate would be low. It seems to me there was a small cluster in one of these waterfront hi-risers.
The point is that the infection rate is going up in all UWS zip codes, with 10069 and 10024 leading the pack. It is not alarmist; it is a statement of fact based on health data. It is a call for caution, which is fully warranted.
It’s not a percentage of population, it’s a percentage of people tested. Don’t leave da comments if you can’t do the maths.
Anyone else notice that this zip code includes the Trump buildings on Riverside Boulevard?
LOL. Of course, the underlying real estate of Riverside South was purchased from Trump by Extell (the real estate arm of the Carlyle Group) many years ago. And even the buildings are not actually owned by him, even those that continue to bear his name – which some no longer do, after several co-op boards voted to remove his name…lol.
It took a whole three comments before someone blamed Trump.
That is SO last week.
Isn’t that the whole Trump neighborhood? So typi al.
I wonder if all the new buildings over there, which do not have openable windows are sharing too much of the same air?? How are each apt’s air being ventilated ? Need appropriate COVID filters! Worth investigating.
That makes sense. Many new buildings have central air, which would definitely increase movement of the virus. :-O
So what are you going to do about it? Call the buildings in the neighborhood? Call 311?
What percentage of the people live in the buildings that concern your?
Oh, right- you’re not going to do anything, and you have no idea what buildings these cases are in. So just keep posting on some website. Post a reply to my comment after you’ve called 311.
My professional understanding is that building to building transmission is not significant because virus particles are highly diluted over large spaces. Studies repeatedly have shown that most transmission is person to person with people too close to one another and not wearing masks.
The mayor at a press conference… In which he said we may need to do something. Either do something, instruct people to do something, or… What’s the point?
I guess ineffective is at least better than corrupt.
It is impossible to make sense of relative transmission rates without seeing the comparative rates in individual blocks or buildings. Zip Code rates have limited value. Also, reported case rates in an area tend to be higher than the actual rates in those areas. This is because the people who go to be tested tend to be those who already show symptoms. Fewer non-symptomatic people go for testing.
What ever happened to the common Viral infection, flu or cold. Possibly these tests are not full proof and including people with the basic fall time issues. Also to me the low numbers don’t warrant renewed lockdown. Just my opinion.
Everyone here is sharing their personal experience and “Just my opinion”
I can tell you from my personal experience that the New Jewish Home nursing home on 106th Street has had three more Code Blue deaths today, for a total over six since the first of the November. That’s more than they had during the last month. All COVID? COVID related? Just old age? Don’t know, but it’s a higher number than last month. I look at nursing homes as a canary-in-the-coalmine metric for increasing infection and mortality rates across the city.
Add that to your calculus. Or not.
