Long-time UWS Chinese restaurant The Cottage – now dubbed New Cottage – has reopened, and can now be found at 2199 Broadway, on the corner of 78th Street.
“We hope the community can visit us for an amazing experience of Szechuan cuisine and taste our famous Szechuan dumplings!”
New Cottage is also offering a 20% discount for dine-in and take-out until November 15.
The original Cottage restaurant opened on 76th and Columbus in 1981. A year later, they relocated to 77th and Amsterdam. This location closed last year when the building’s new landlord refused to renew the restaurant’s lease.
The previous tenant at 2199 Broadway was La Caridad, which also closed last year after serving the Upper West Side since the late 1960s.
Here’s a look at New Cottage’s menu.
New Cottage is open daily from 11am to 10pm.
Will they give our free bottles of wine? ;P
So blessed to see it resurrect!
Super excited for delish food and wine!!!
Can’t wait to go ASAP! They are an institution! And hopefully still provide free Franzia haha
Now the menu looks like a generic Chinese food menu. Doubtful if they’ll be pouring wine; if they do, I’ll go anyway, I suppose.
Do we know about the wine?
Does anyone know if they are they delivering yet?
Judging from staff and menu changes, it’s an entirely new restaurant with a Hunam Gardens/Szechuan Gardens (generic UWS restaurants for decades) menu. Sadly, it’s
Cottage in name only with $11 lunch menu prices and $19 shrimp dishes – who says we weren’t spoiled by former quality and prices of the “old” Cottage before too much grease and oil covered every dish?
Many missing OG Cottage items from the menu and who offers Moo Shu vegetable and Moo Shu shrimp but no Moo Shu pork?
I checked with the “front desk” mgr and free wine is “on the way when permit comes.” Yeah, and the check is in the mail. All that time– what’s it been, a year or more? — that signage indicated that this location is the “new” home of the “old” Cottage but the permit request is no further along in the process? We can hope the Franzia is around the corner but this sure ain’t your father’s….or mother’s Cottage. Time will tell.
It’s not an entirely new restaurant. I believe its under the same management as the previous Cottage except for the owners. If anything the New Cottage has more authentic food choices especially in their Chef’s signature dishes. The signature dishes are amazing and ofc their Szechuan dumplings! I can never seem to understand why people rant about Chinese food but not try out their signature dishes.
Completely agree, Dan Li! And these negative, pessimistic reviews really make me sad. These restaurants have been through SO MUCH in the last almost 2 years during Covid – and even before that it’s not like it’s an easy industry. So what if it was a little different this time around? I’m just happy for them that they are able to reopen. I can’t wait to support and maybe try some new items! Also, sorting out your liquor license or liquor serving abilities or whatever *after* opening is pretty commonplace in NYC. That is a whole feat within itself. Just happy to hear that boxes of Franzia are on the roadmap! New or old, I’m psyched to have The Cottage back!!!
I remember my first time dining at the previous location: The Cottage. It was a fantastic experience, as it met my standards as a Foodie. But when I heard that it closed, I was a bit devastated since it was one of my favorite go to places for family dinners.
I am also a teacher, and I was told by one of my students about the grand opening of New Cottage. I love Chinese food, so I usually travel around an hour to Chinatown in the LES. But New Cottage is a lot more convenient, so I went in to give them a go.
The dining space is small, so a lot of people do takeout. Luckily there were seats outside, so I sat there. The waitress was very friendly, so I tipped her a $25. I started with my usual order at the old location: Shredded Chicken with garlic sauce, Roast Duck and Wonton, and my all time favorite Pad Thai. The Cottage set high expectations for the New Cottage, and let me say this, they exceeded. I was very impressed with the organization, setup, staff, and most importantly THE FOOD.
