Owner of Talia’s Steakhouse Opens Small Takeout Spot Next Door

The owner of a popular kosher restaurant has expanded by opening a takeout spot right next to it.

Effie Nagar – who’s operated Talia’s Steakhouse & Bar since 2002 – has announced the soft-opening of Shawarma Shabazi, located right next to Talia’s at 668 Amsterdam Avenue (between 92nd and 93rd streets).

“Talia’s has converted its former bar area into a new, fast-casual takeout restaurant serving delicious shawarma, falafel, sabich and more,” Talia’s stated in an email.

The new takeout restaurant was named after a neighborhood in Tel Aviv called Shabazi (which was named after Rabbi Shalom Shabazi). Nagar describes the area as being “full with authentic Middle Eastern restaurants.”

“Shawarma Shabazi is designed to be like in the streets of Tel Aviv – fast food to be eaten standing up or on the go.”

The soft-opening kicked off on Sunday, August 6. Current hours are 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. daily, but after the grand opening (coming in about a week, Effie tells us), hours will extend to 11 a.m – 11 p.m. Take out and delivery will be available as well, and the menu is being finalized.
