Shakespeare in the Park will Return this Summer

Shakespeare in the Park will be returning to the Delacorte Theater in Central Park this summer, the Public Theater has announced on its website.

Shakespeare in the Park was one of many NYC traditions put on pause last year due to the pandemic. This pause came shortly after the theater had announced its 2020 lineup.

“We have spent the last year getting ready. We have been producing new work and preparing a safe return. We’ve grieved, Zoomed, innovated, supported our communities, and connected our city. We’ve gathered brilliant artists to imagine summer under the stars in Central Park and are planning a return of Free Shakespeare in the Park …. ”

The annual event will run from July 5 to August 29, with free performances of Merry Wives, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor.

“Set in South Harlem amidst a vibrant and eclectic community of West African immigrants, Merry Wives will be a celebration of Black joy, laughter, and vitality. A New York story about the tricks of the heart, performed in the heart of the City,” writes the Public Theater.

The theater states that information about the performance schedule, safety protocols and ticket distribution will be announced in the coming weeks.
