The Vitamin Peddler will soon have to vacate its location at 364 Amsterdam Avenue, between 77th and 78th streets.
ILTUWS spoke with owner David Endo to discuss the sign in the store window which reads “Store Moving 1/31/2022.” Endo told us he’s been working on running consecutive 3-month leases over the course of the last two years, so he saw this day coming. He went on to tell us that the Vitamin Peddler does not have a new location to move to yet, so the Upper West Side may soon be without one of its cherished small businesses.

David Endo was a former employee at Health Nuts at 2141 Broadway, which ended up closing over a large rent increase years ago. Upper West Sider Lesley Heller told us how he “was encouraged by his many loyal customers who depended on his honest, knowledgeable advice, to open his own shop.” She went on to express how “We are all heartbroken that we might lose this exceptional health resource, and hope he can find an affordable new location on the UWS asap.”
If Yelp is any indicator of quality, The Vitamin Peddler has a 5-star rating, boasting perfect scores from 42 of its 44 reviews. James D. was the first to write, “I looked all over the West Side (at least five stores on the Upper West Side) for a specific homeopathic remedy and no one had it. I called David at The Vitamin Peddler and he said that they did indeed have it.”

Diane B. wrote, “This shop is one of the reasons I still love living on the UWS. David is knowledgeable and has helped me by recommending many remedies. I’ve made a decision to buy all of my vitamins here instead of Amazon because of his honesty & expertise. Sure, it’s annoying to have to wait sometimes when he is talking to someone else — but instead of writing a bad review like Mr. Lone One Star, I walk out of the store and come back later, with gratitude that places like this still exist in our crazy world. The time David takes with his customers is what makes him special.” These types of glowing reviews come one after another.
Endo asked us to come back next week as he was busy helping his customers. We hope there’s a good landlord with a heart out there who cares about quality small business and can help David, The Vitamin Peddler, find a new home.
We’ll keep you posted.
Too bad David doesn’t have a new place lined up.
But after the 75th and Broadway Health Nuts closed in 2007, David didn’t open this shop for something approaching a year.
Hope he finds a place in the west 80s or west 70s. He certainly has a following.
I HOPE THEY FIND A HOME.
Perhaps David can find a better deal off the Avenue, like the vacated store on 71 st off B’way, between Col. & B’way. He will have his loyal followers and clientele.
Perhaps they can rent the empty space on the 2nd floor of Fairway where they had the restaurant.
Except Fairway already sells vitamins and herbs, it’s one of the reasons the 75th and Broadway Health Nuts closed.
Years ago, from what I remember, a grocery store was going to close because of a large rent increase and a Duane Reade or CVS was going into that space. People in the neighborhood called the landlord and told them they would boycott the new place. The landlord ended up letting the grocery store stay. Maybe people in the neighborhood should call these contacts and state their concerns. Here’s the info: Found on the HPD website

Okay, except, it’s clear that the landlord is actively emptying all the retail spaces along the Amsterdam side of the building.
So it’s not one store being replaced by a CVS, Duane Reade, etc.
