Police are on the lookout for a suspect who stole a bag from an elderly Fairway shopper earlier this month.
It happened on Friday, August 4 at about 4:09 p.m. Surveillance cameras captured images of the suspect which police have shared with the media.
NYPD officials say the suspect removed a shopping bag from an 80-year-old woman before fleeing. The bag had a cell phone and a credit card in it, and the incident is being investigated as grand larceny. An NYPD representative tells us the value of the bag and its contents was approximately $400. (While the minimum amount to charge for grand larceny is $1,000, stealing a credit card also qualifies.)
The bag was not removed by force, and no injuries occurred as a result of the incident.

Anyone with relevant information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by sending a direct message to @NYPDTips on Twitter.
It will be interesting to see if Fairway’s facial recognition technology will help the police arrest the suspect more quickly.
“This technology is helping our stores reduce retail crime, an industry-wide challenge that has increased dramatically over the last few years,” said a spokeswoman for Wakefern (Fairway’s parent company) when we contacted them about it back in March.
Glad all those new in the last 2 years cameras serve a purpose other than scanning faces so as to ID as many shoppers as possible.
I doubt if the mayor and police commissioner sees this site and every other neighborhood site, but breaking news guys, crime isn’t down and it’s always the usual suspects. Photos don’t lie.
I agree with you 100%. It’s awful n doesn’t matter what neighborhood ur in most of the time! I’m leaving NYC hoping it’s better in Florida. I heard from a good friend not nearly as bad. OK let’s keep it moving! Thank u
